World oceans day is an internationally recognised event, a day of celebration and education focusing on the fabulous creatures and habitats within our oceans and the issues facing them.
Our oceans day event was held in San Juan de los Terreros on the boarders of Almeria and Murcia. A beautiful spot by the beach where we gathered with related organisations, products and interested parties to inform and entertain the public.
There were a number of proactive groups who arrange beach cleans (Coastal Cleaners Andalucia, Montemero and Trash hound Terreros) a live art demonstration by Cheyenne Hollanders resulting in a beautiful, unique mural which has subsequently raised 800€ for Equinac who care for aquatic animals the length of the Almerian coast, yoga classes, zumba demonstrations, kayaking and paddle boarding with SUP Terreros. We demonstrated both the issue of plastic and litter via information boards and suggested solutions with a prototype river capture system (widely used in Australia) which gatherers the litter travelling from inland rivers to the ocean during floods.
We held a successful tombola with a mixture of prizes including a number of vouchers donated by local eateries, again raising funds for the work Equinac do and throughout the day we were entertained by musicians Ken Greisen, Kay Frances and Kev Moore who kindly gave their time for free.
Overall a big part of the success of the day was that it happened! After a small scale version of the event last year by Coastal Cleaners Andalucia, managing to bring together these people and organisations, the Town hall of Pulpi and the tourism agency of Los Terreros was an achievement in itself. I feel a connection was certainly made and one we intend to repeat next year, though perhaps a little later in the day to avoid the midday sun!
Well done to everyone who attended and supported the event in whichever capacity. It was great to meet so many people who care about the ocean and the environment and massive thanks to everyone who gave their time and energy to make the event happen. I hope to see you again next year!
